Cruising Seminar Wednesday, Jan 29th, 10am, at Rick’s Bar

This is an informal gathering, targeted at cruisers heading south toward the Panama Canal and beyond, soon after Sailfest 2003. The purpose of this meeting will be to exchange information from current sources, primarily other cruisers reporting back, in addition to the available cruising guides for the area. Experienced cruisers who have traveled the area will be there to talk about their experiences and answer any questions.

A CDROM is being created, made up of the material gathered at the Puerto Vallarta Southbounder’s Group, earlier this year, plus additional letters and documentation from cruisers recently traveling the area included in the CDROM as well. These CDROM’s will be made available at the meeting to the cruisers for a donation of 100 pesos, going towards helping the Netzahualcoytl Indian School here in Zihuatanejo.

There is no charge for attending the meeting, which will be held at Rick’s Bar. Please get there on time, so that you do not miss any of the discussions.

Wireless Email Seminar Thursday, January 30th, 10am, at Rick’s Bar

This is an informal gathering, targeted at cruisers who currently use Winlink or Sailmail, and are interested in learning about, and perhaps upgrading to the latest technology, Pactor 3. Even though you do not currently use Winlink or Sailmail, you are welcome to come and learn the basics of this capability on board your boat, its many uses, and its cost. You will be able to update your PTC modem to Pactor 3 here in Zihuatanejo, using the information we are going to cover in the seminar. The process includes how to pay the $150USD for the upgrade to Pactor 3 via the PTC website, or by email or fax, and how to receive the upgrade via your own Winlink or Sailmail email system!

With the up to 4 times faster speed of Pactor 3, it is now realistic and very easy to download custom weather charts on demand for your specific area upon request. In addition, you can request the very same WEFAX charts currently received using the weatherfax software, except  you would no longer need to tune into a WEFAX frequency, wait for the chart you want to be broadcasted. Plus you get a perfect, digital quality chart every time, without the frequency propagation and interference issues getting in the way.

A copy of the CDROM containing the latest Winlink/Sailmail/Airmail software and documentation will be made available at the meeting. This CD was originally created to collect donations at the SSCA meeting in Florida last month by Jim Corenman, Steve Waterman and the rest of the pactor email gang.  For your donation of 250 pesos, you will receive the CD chock-full of the latest software, documentation and Powerpoint presentations on Pactor 3, GRIB viewer, plus all the content found on the Winlink and Airmail websites, plus printed copies of selected presentations. And you will contribute to the non-for-profit Winlink/Sailmail/Airmail team, and to the Indian school here in Zihuatanejo.
