ENGINE

-Yanmar 4JH2E 50 HP

- 2500 hours (September 2009)

- Cruising speed 6.5 knots at 2200 RPM, 7.0 knots at 2800 RPM, 7.3 knots at 3200 RPM

- The Yanmar is rated for 24 hour usage at 3400 RPM

-   Mirador's fuel burn rates are 0.55 GPH at 5.5 knots, 0.9 GPH at 6.5 knots, 1.3 GPH at 7.0 knots. So we have an motor range (10% reserve) of over 1,100 NM at 6.3 knots and 650 NM at 7 knots

Propeller

- Maxprop 18"  adjustable pitch feathering prop (rebuilt to new condition by PYI in January 2004)

The Maxprop provides exquisite control and power in reverse.  I can back Mirador in a straight line in almost any conditions.  I have been able to back at 6 knots in a straight line for a half mile (just testing!)

- 18" x 15" fixed (spare)

Fuel System

We have made several changes to the Caliber 40 fuel system and tankage in the interest of reliability and usability.

- Two aluminum fuel tanks at  83 gallons and  55 gallons

Each tank has it's own fill and vent and there is a shutoff valve on the suction side of each tank

- Dual Racor fuel filters

The Yanmar fuel system can be fed from either Racor filter while the 2nd filter is being serviced.  This ensures that even with very dirty fuel you can keep the engine running while you change filters.  The Yanmar injection system is pretty much self bleeding so it is pretty hard for dirty fuel to stop the engine.

- Raccor vacuum gauge for monitoring fuel filter status

This gauge is mounted under the top step and can be easily seen from the galley.  We know when it is time to switch filters just by glancing at the gauge.

- Easily accessed manifold for managing fuel

The filters and all the valves for controlling suction, filtering, and return lines for diesel fuel are all under the top step on the starboard side of the engine compartment, above the engine.

Oil Change System

There is a small 12 volt pump plumbed to the bottom of the oil pan with a discharge line in the top of the engine compartment.  A triple interlock prevents accidental usage of this system.  A 12 volt circuit breaker must be activated, the discharge valve must be opened, AND, the spring loaded pump activation must be held on to keep the pump running.

Speed Seal
A SpeedSeal water pump cover was installed on the Yanmar.  This allows the water pump impellor to be changed with no tools.  Check out SpeedSeal for more details.

Fire Suppression System

- FyreWatch Automatic Halon System

Mounted on starboard side aft of the engine with the discharge valve directly over the engine.  There is also a manual activator mounted in the cockpit.
